Britten Six Metamorphoses after Ovid
Holst Terzetto Oliver Knussen Elegaic Arabesques
Britten Elegy for solo viola; Phantasy Quartet

Quant a

Fantasies, elegies, metamorphoses: Britten’s arresting works for oboe – his youthful oboe quartet, and the dazzling solo character pieces first performed on Thorpeness Meare at the fourth Aldeburgh Festival – perfectly encapsulate the character and dramatic range of the instrument’s possibilities: hushed and strident, lyrical and martial. Gustav Holst’s only piece of chamber music and two small elegies complete the programme. A clarinet weaves delicate contrapuntal lines round a cor anglais melody in Knussen’s tiny memorial to Panufnik; the introspective, austere Elegy was written by the 16-year old Britten for his own instrument just after leaving school.
